Thanks to Oscar I learned several things on my recent trip to Paraguay. First, Oscar showed me that Paraguay is a great birding destination with over 700 species possible. This was surprising to me given that Paraguay is seldom mentioned by the major birding companies. Also there is significant diversity of habitat and a low population. Even though it is a little smaller than California it has only 8 million people compared to 40+ million. Second, I was thinking there would be little birding infrastructure. Oscar took me to some great places with comfortable accommodations and outstanding home cooking. And lastly Oscar showed me a superb guide with a great ear, insane knowledge of where to find specific bird species, has good photography senses, is a generous teacher about the people and culture of Paraguay and is an enjoyable traveling companion. I’ve been birding in over 100 countries and I would rank my Paraguay trip with Oscar as one of my top adventures.
